**General Duties And Responsibilities**
* To support the vision, mission and guiding principles of the City.
* While performing any procedure, all associates and contract personnel must observe applicable Safety, Health, and Environmental rules and guidelines. The use of appropriate personal protective equipment is required.
* Attend and participate in training opportunities and seminars relevant to this position.
* Adhere to appropriate City operating procedures, benefit rules, employment, and safety policies/practices.

**Essential Duties And Responsibilities**
* Maintains all records pertaining to the receipt, storage, and disposition of all property and evidence;
* Maintains and accurate inventory of all property and evidence;
* Disposes of all property and evidence in accordance with all state laws and agency policy and procedures;
* Coordinates the process of transporting evidence to the crime lab;
* The supervision of personnel assigned to the unit;
* Enforces agency policy and procedure for evidence/property storage.
* Handles items of evidence and property, to show continuity of the chain of custody and security;
* Performs routine clerical work; duties may include logging in materials and documents, entering data and information into computerized files, filing and retrieving materials from manual or computerized filing system, typing correspondence, memos and other documents, and sorting documents.
* Operates a computer, typewriter, calculator, photocopier, facsimile, and other office equipment.
* Operates a City vehicle when necessary.

**Job Scope**
The purpose of this position is to manage the property and evidence obtained by Union City Police Personnel and to ensure its safe handling, safe keeping and proper disposition. The property and evidence custodian is exposed to various incident settings and must rely upon previous training and experience in the application of procedure. Errors in the work can jeopardize property and hinder the successful prosecution of offenders.

* Job has recurring work situations involving moderate degrees of discretion. The need for accuracy and effective utilization of accepted programs and procedures is high. Errors in judgment and execution will waste time and resources adversely impacting unit performance. Incumbent operates independently but work is verified by supervision.

**Supervisory Controls:**
This person works in the Police Department under the direct supervision of a Captain.

**Guidelines:**
Guidelines include federal and state laws, criminal and traffic laws, city ordinances, departmental policies and procedures and court decisions. Guidelines may require interpretation and judgment.

**Communications/Customer Contact**
Contacts are typically with co\-workers, the general public, other city employees, courts, and attorneys. Contacts are typically accessed to exchange information, resolve problems and provide services.

**Competencies/Specific Experience Or Training Preferred**
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

**Minimum Qualifications**
High school diploma or equivalent; Associate’s degree preferred; valid Georgia Driver’s license; US citizen ; at least 21 years of age. Successful completion of the pre\-employment process which includes written exam, oral interview, background check, criminal records and traffic history check, medical and drug screening, polygraph evaluation, successful completion of Police Academy; equivalent combination of education and experience.

**Knowledge, Skills And Abilities**
* Knowledge of law enforcement concepts and terminology, including criminal investigation, law enforcement and crime prevention; first\-aid principles and techniques; report preparation and record keeping; and human behavior theories related to criminology, crisis intervention and crowd control;
* Knowledge of laws and court decisions pertaining to law enforcement, including search and seizure, suspects and prisoner’s rights, and custody and protection of evidence; operational principles and practices of criminal investigation, law enforcement and crime prevention; court and trial procedures;
* Knowledge of Union City Police Department, policies and procedures; geographic layout of City; vocabulary of technical/specialized fields of law enforcement such as identification, detention and pathology;
* Skill in learning, interpreting, applying and explaining complex laws and regulations; reading and interpreting documents such as maps, diagrams and textbooks;
* Skill in performing accurate mathematical calculations; comprehending and retaining factual information and applying what is learned;
* Skill in communicating effectively in both verbal and written form; exercising tact, self\-restraint, judgment and strategy in dealing with people of all races, ethnicities and socio\-economic groups and who may have emotional or physical difficulties;
* Ability to operate the computer and various programs;
* Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
* Ability to work rotating shifts, varying hours and be on call.

**Work Environment**
Work is performed either in an office environment or in a variety of field and office settings and may require exposure to dangerous and life\-threatening situations. willing to work any hour of the day or night (shift work), overtime
